Dragon Quest 3’s HD-2D Remake Teased After Three Years of Silence

Square Enix has dropped a teaser for the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake, and it’s been three long years since we heard anything about this project. They picked Dragon Quest Day to throw us a bone, and it’s about time!

Back in May 2021, Square Enix announced they were working on five new Dragon Quest games, one of which was this HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3. If you’ve played Octopath Traveler or Triangle Strategy, you know what HD-2D is all about. It’s that sweet mix of old-school 2D sprites with modern 3D backgrounds. It looks awesome, and it’s perfect for a classic like Dragon Quest 3.

But then, radio silence. For three years. No updates, no teasers, nothing. I was starting to think this project got canned or something. But nope, today they dropped a teaser video on the official Dragon Quest account on X (yeah, Twitter’s new name; I’m still getting used to it). The video shows the Dragon Quest 3 logo symbol and says, “the legacy begins.” And they added, “The legend of Erdrick draws near.

Naturally, everyone’s freaking out and speculating. Some folks think we might get HD-2D remakes of the whole Erdrick trilogy. That would be crazy good, right? But honestly, it’s probably just Dragon Quest 3 for now. Makes sense since it’s the first game in the series where the hero is actually named Erdrick.

The teaser also hints that it’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. So basically, everyone’s gonna get a shot at this one, no matter what platform you’re on. That’s pretty sweet because more people get to experience it.

Just to give you some context, Dragon Quest has been a huge deal since 1986, selling over 82 million units worldwide. The last big game, Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, was a monster hit. It first came out on the 3DS and PS4 in Japan in 2017, and then spread out to the rest of the world and other platforms.

This teaser really got me pumped. The HD-2D style brings that nostalgia while making everything look fresh and exciting. If you’re a long-time fan or even if you’re new to the series, this remake is something to look forward to. It’s got the potential to be a big hit, blending the best of old and new.
